The COVID-19 pandemic has created uncertainty for businesses on a global scale. Businesses have been forced to shut down or scale down in terms of personnel or overall resources and infrastructure. In the case of the mobile IoT industry, many have responded by discontinuing operations altogether or choosing to cut corners with key investments. However, with the way the mobile industry and 3GPP (standards organizations that develop protocols for mobile telecommunications) standards continue to evolve, it is crucial that businesses remain ahead of the curve in preparing for 5G compatibility and deployment capabilities.

When it comes to mobile IoT applications, the goal is to access Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) to best support low cost, low power devices that require long battery life and the ability to operate in remote or hard to reach areas. The two most common LPWANs that are utilized for mobile IoT deployments are NB-IoT and LTE-M, due to their low power consumption, low device complexity, security and privacy features, and support from all major mobile equipment, chipset and module manufacturers (Source: Telit).

NB-IoT and LTE-M are already being utilized in the Asia Pacific, Middle East, Americas and Europe for smart metering, smart parking, smart transportation and smart agriculture. The two technologies are currently compatible with 2G, 3G, and 4G, with plans from the 3GPP to be supported by the 5G core network to benefit from increased network capacity for large IoT deployments.
