During last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, there was great buzz from drones, including human transport drone developer Ehang. The show even had its own section entirely devoted to small unmanned aircraft vehicles. Since then, a lot has happened. Ehang has proven that its system is more than just a novel idea, and the place of sUAVs in the technology space has not only been realized as a mainstay but now been picked as a pillar for growing the use of technology in the years ahead.

In its semi-annual report on the tech industry, drones were listed as one of six major emerging tech categories that will grow in 2017. This year, drone sales will reach $1 billion and top 3.4 million consumer units sold—a 40 percent increase from the previous year.

And, as evidenced by the type of news we are receiving from the CES show in Las Vegas, the buzz and excitement about drones isn’t just about the drone manufacturers themselves, but also about other tech firms that are integrating them with their own offerings.

Alarm.com is joining with Qualcomm to put drones to work on home and business security solutions. When an intruder breaches a perimeter at a Alarm.com secured property, a Qualcomm Snapdragon sUAV will be deployed. Alarm.com has found success through its algorithms and video capture strategies to home security, and now it is adding drones through its partnership with Qualcomm.

Seagate Technologies has also seen the importance of partnering with a major drone manufacturer. The company, a major global data storage provider, will work with DJI to find ways to store the massive amount of data generated during a video-capture sUAV flight. During a 25-minute flight, a DJI Inspire 2 with a 4K camera can generate 120GB.
